There seems to be a resurgent interest in the inclusion of the bed and breakfast experience for Central California Coast vacationers as well as a growth in the bed and breakfast industry and small inns that market themselves as Bed and Breakfasts within a short traveling distance to Hearst Castle. Although it is across the hill from San Simeon "The Hacienda" Restaurant & Guest Lodge (was Hearst's own private hunting lodge) near Jolon offers an ambiance which is as close as you will get to staying at Hearst Castle; Randolph Hearst and many of his famous friends and celebrities have stayed there. The Hacienda Guest Lodge was once owned and conceived by Randolph Hearst and designed by the same architect during the same period as Hearst Castle. It has been called Hearst's "hunting lodge" but it was really another place to entertain guests and support the operations of his huge cattle ranch, Hearst did not allow hunting. It is not a Bed and Breakfast but the last time I stayed at the Hacienda they provided packaged pastries for breakfast and there is a lounge and good restaurant available as well.

If you are seeking a Bed and Breakfast near San Simeon for the seaside experience, regretfully the only Bed and Breakfast that was near the beach and actually in San Simeon, the Sebastians' Bed and Breakfast is now closed but across from the ocean and just 6 miles to the south a number of the small inns on Moonstone Beach (about 6 Miles south of San Simeon Hearst Castle)are marketing themselves as Bed and Breakfasts and some of the breakfasts are quite good but some also are just cold continental breakfasts.

If you are looking for a first class and full on Bed and Breakfast across from Moonstone Beach with fireplace rooms plus a long list of luxury amenities it would be the Blue Whale Inn Bed and BreaKfast, which is only 6 miles from San Simeon's Hearst Castle.

Although there are many good accommodations on Moonstone Beach Drive(about 6 miles from San Simeon Hearst Castle) with fireplaces in the rooms and serving some sort of hot breakfast the most resonably priced best bet seems to be the Pelican Cove Inn, though it has over 60 rooms all rooms have a fireplace and some have great ocean views; their "deluxe continental breakfast" is good breakfast buffet and includes some hot items like scrambled eggs and waffles.

If you are a true Bed and Breakfast aficionado you are probably interested in a friendly, informative and attentive innkeeper and staff. Besides a clean comfortable well kept lodging travelers who frequent Bed and Breakfasts also look for real wood fireplaces, connected private bathrooms, excellent home cooked foods and extra comfort enjoyments like milk and cookies at bedtime.

If you would like the best area full on "Bed and Breakfast experience" and don't mind being about 2 miles from the beach and 10 miles south of San Simeon Hearst Castle then J. Patrick House Bed and Breakfast is the place (8 guest rooms with wood burning fireplaces and more); it is the areas most award winning and raved about in reviews Bed and Breakfast.

If it is the San Simeon beach experience you value for your San Simeon vacation you might consider the Cavalier Oceanfront Resort; this is a 90 room motel so you won't get that personal intimate experience which can be enjoyed at a true Bed and Breakfast it is on the beach in San Simeon Acres only three miles south of the Hearst Castle. This lodging has a good onsite restaurant and can also provide a "real wood" fireplace which is another thing that vacationers seek in a good Bed and Breakfast.

The beautiful historic award winning Olallieberry Inn Bed and Breakfast was built in 1873 and is situated in the heart of the East Village on the banks of Santa Rosa Creek. Her Castle Homestay Bed and Breakfast

Her Castle Homestay Bed and Breakfast takes use of recently coined term "homestay" saying on their website that they are not typical of a Bed and Breakfast because they offer only two guest rooms but the truth is in Europe where the term Bed and Breakfast first came into use it is not uncommon for a Bed and Breakfast to have only two guest rooms and these innkeepers are reported to serve an excellent breakfast. Although this lodging is not located in a classical or historic building Bill and Eleanor Seavey have successfully been operating this Bed and Breakfast from their home on Lodge Hill in Cambria since 2005 and guests have been giving glowing testimonials. Guest accommodations are 2 luxurious suites with private baths and private decks and also private entrances. I see no need to apologize for being small, this allows for a more personal and customizable Bed and Breakfast vacation experience provided by these wonderful hosts and the rates are quite reasonable. Her Castle is located in the pine forest of Cambria 2 miles from the beach and 10 miles from Hearst Castle San Simeon, California.

Pelican Cove Inn

The Pelican Cove Inn located on the beautiful Moonstone Beach is a bit large at 48 guest rooms for what most of us think of as a Bed and Breakfast but they do serve an excellent complimentary breakfast buffet with, eggs, bacon, potatoes, toast, bagels, waffles, juice and such every morning and in the afternoon, wine, tea and snacks are served in the lounge; at the end of the day enjoy some deserts such as cheesecake, and cookies, with tea, coffee and hot chocolate. They offer suites and all of their cozy rooms have a fireplaces, hair dryer, iron & ironing board, comfortable robes, complimentary tea, coffee, water and a coffee maker. Many of the well appointed rooms have a full or partial view of the ocean. There is a heated pool and spacious, comfortable lounge and lobby where you can relax and enjoy the warm fire. Access the Internet from your room with your computer or their TV. The Moonstone Beach Boardwalk is just across the street and Hearst Castle San Simeon is only about 7 miles north.

Blue Whale Inn Bed and Breakfast

The Blue Whale Inn is a AAA rated Four-Diamond Bed & Breakfast located on the bluffs above the ocean on northern end Moonstone Beach Drive. They offer luxurious mini-suites in a beautiful garden oceanfront setting with charming French-Country decor; there are 7 total separate guest accommodations each with private bath and whirlpool tub, 6 with gas fireplaces, 1 pet friendly, there is also handicap access. The ocean view from the breakfast lobby room is phenomenal and some of the guest rooms and mini suites offer peeks at the Pacific, the wonderful Moonstone Beach Boardwalk is just across the street. One of the big draws here is the gracious hospitality and full gourmet breakfast; there is also wine, and hors d'oeuvres in the afternoon and generous upscale amenities including wireless access. Moonstone Beach and Leffingwell Landing are just across the street and San Simeon Hearst Castle Visitors Center is about 6 miles north.

There is a two or three day minimum for weekends. Children are acceptable, smoking is not allowed in the rooms or buildings but you can smoke in the outdoor areas of the property, they offer handicap access and one pet friendly room.

McCall Farm Bed and Breakfast

Go visit the Mcall Farm! Yes it is a bit of a drive to San Simeon (15 miles) but this country adventure should be worth the drive.

Fog's End Bed and Breakfast is a well kept old historic farm house located in the East Village and has been completely remodeled as Cambria’s newest Bed& Breakfast. There are 3 guest accommodations; the Daisy and Rose rooms have Queen Size beds and private baths, the Starlight room has a California King bed and private bath. The common areas include a Formal Dining Room and Library. Situated on eight rural acres on Main Street and Santa Rosa Creek Road the Fog's End is a short walk to shops, restaurants and businesses in the East Village. Traveling on a tight budget or simply have better things to spend your money on than a king size featherbed, private bathroom with a whirlpool bathtub, and a full gourmet breakfast? The Bridge Street Inn located in a quite area of the downtown East Village offers travelers the basics on a sensible budget. This unique lodging describes themselves as a cozy European-style guest house; they offer 4 comfortable private rooms and a small co-ed dorm room for sleeping quarters and a communal kitchen, living room and yard. The guest rooms are just the basics you won't find TV's telephones or adjoining private baths. Sebastian's Bed and Breakfast- San Simeon, California is regretfully closed and the Sebestians Historic Store has been a Gift Shop and Coffeehouse but what is next?

Regretfully Sebastian's no longer has a Bed and Breakfast or offers lodging any accommodations and as of this writing May 6 2007 the Sebastian's General Store is closed for renovations. Do stop by if you are in San Simeon and visit the historic Sebastian's General Store; they could reopen at any time and say they will be offering a small museum and who knows what else. So the Sebastian's General Store is history, the Sebastian's Bed & Breakfast is history and the Sebastian's Gift Shop and Coffee Bar is history; I can't wait to see what this historic site has to offer next besides a small museum.

Piedras Blancas Motel - North of San Simeon, California at Piedras Blancas

Property Update Feburary 2008: The Piedras Blancas Motel property, a small motel, residence, mini-mart, gas station and 10 acres is now owned by a land conservancy; the motel and gas station are closed and no overnight RV parking anymore but the parking lot is posted open for day use. The Piedras Blancas Motel has a couple of nice stretches of beach when the tide is moderate; parking and public access to the beaches is all, there are no other services currently being offered there.

"The Hacienda" Guest Lodge & Hacienda Bar

This Hearst Castle lodging is a good distance from Hearst Castle and the Pacific Coast. The association that makes it special and the reason it has been included on the Hearst Castle Hotels Website is that it once belonged to William Randolph Hearst and was in fact Hearst Ranch housing and Hearst's guest hunting lodge.

If you are the kind of person who enjoys the road less traveled and especially if you are touring in a sports car or motorcycle then the extra curves and mileage to this Hearst Castle lodging will not deter you, (particularly Nacimiento Fergusson Rd. which is one narrow curvy route you can use to get to The Hacienda Guest Lodge by the Fort Hunter Liggett back gate). The inland weather is most often better and the scenery in route between Hearst Castle and The Hacienda is phenomenal.

Julia Morgan, the same architect that designed Hearst Castle planned the Spanish style Hacienda for Hearst in 1929 and Hearst's hunting lodge provided accommodations for Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Teddy Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover to name a few.

The prices for lodging at the Hacienda is quite reasonable and there is an adjoining bar/lounge which the hours and days of operation vary depending on the season and how busy they are but it is open Wednesday through Saturday or Sunday 7 PM until 11PM weekdays or till 2AM weekends. The Hacienda Bar has cocktails as well as beer and wine, pool, music, chips, pretzels and such (there is talk of pizza maybe coming); also available on base which can be used by civilians who are Hacienda Guest Lodge patrons are many other recreational facilities there is a restaurant "the Cable Cafe" (open 6AM - 9PM), a sports center, recreation center, swimming pool, bowling alley with dining and a movie theatre which are all on the post and nearby the Hacienda Guest Lodge. The Hacienda is located on US Fort Hunter Liggett you will be under federal jurisdiction so you should expect extra security, rules and regulations.
The M.W.R. (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) at Fort Hunter Liggett now manages the Hacienda Guest Lodge and the Hacienda Bar but regretfully the Hacienda Restaurant is currently closed as of March 25, 2008; hopefully it will open again sometime (the Hacienda Restaurant Concession is open for private bid; do you want to run a cool restaurant?).
The Mission San Antonio de Padua, the third Spanish Mission in California is a short walk from the Hacienda and is a wonderful place to visit.

The Hacienda has 11 rooms which vary from single rooms with shower and bathrooms down the hall to family rooms to 2 bedroom suites.
