There is are two restaurants within walking distance, the Moonstone Beach Bar and Grill and the Sea Chest Restaurant & Oyster Bar. The Leffingwell Landing State Park which has a small beach and picnic/barbecue areas is within walking distance but for most other things you may want to drive, its only minutes drive from other great restaurants (we recommend Robins), gift, supplies and souvenir shopping, gourmet coffees and teas, wine tasting and art galleries.

Pelican Cove Inn

The Pelican Cove Inn located on the beautiful Moonstone Beach has 48 comfortable guest rooms to choose from.The inn serves an excellent complimentary breakfast buffet with, eggs, bacon, potatoes, toast, bagels, waffles, juice and such every morning and in the afternoon, wine, tea and snacks are served in the lounge; at the end of the day enjoy some deserts such as cheesecake, and cookies, with tea, coffee and hot chocolate. They offer suites and all of their cozy rooms have a fireplaces, hair dryer, iron & ironing board, comfortable robes, complimentary tea, coffee, water and a coffee maker. Many of the well appointed rooms have a full or partial view of the ocean. There is a heated pool and spacious, comfortable lounge and lobby where you can relax and enjoy the warm fire. Access the Internet from your room with your computer or their TV. The Moonstone Beach Boardwalk is just across the street and Hearst Castle San Simeon is only about 7 miles north.

The Leffingwell Landing State Park which has a small beach and picnic/barbecue areas is within walking distance but for most other things you may want to drive; it is less than 2 miles north of Cambria's galleries, restaurants, and shops; the Hearst Castle Visitors Center is 7 miles away. Cozy guestrooms include gas fireplaces, microwaves, compact refrigerators, down bedding, bathrobes, and complimentary bottled water. Windows open to fresh ocean air. the Castle Inn Motel - Cambria, California

The Castle Inn Motel is the Cambria Moonstone Beach Drive lodging where I have stayed the most. My main concern in a motel is a clean inexpensive room with a comfortable bed; I am looking for a good nights sleep and spend little time in the room. The Castle Inn is one off Moonstone oldest lodgings but it has always been well kept and it is one of the least expensive on the beach, some of the rooms have nice ocean views if that is what you are interested in and it is right across from the romantic Moonstone Beach boardwalk and just down the street from Leffingwell Landing State Park which has a small nice beach and free scenic ocean view picnic/barbecue areas. Next door is the Moonstone Beach Bar and Grill; the The Hamlet Restaurant and the Sea Chest Restaurant & Oyster Bar are close by too. Shopping, sightseeing, and other great places to eat are just a short drive to Cambria, San Simeon and the Hearst Castle Visitors Center is just 6 miles north. Guests get free coffee in the morning and a pastry, cable TV, Internet access, telephones and some rooms have gas fireplaces and refrigerators. There is also a heated swimming pool and spa; sorry no pets and all rooms are non-smoking.

Ragged Point Inn and Resort Ocean View Hotel - Ragged Point, California.

Most unique and expensive of these hotels near Hearst Castle. Hotel accommodations are 30 hotel rooms situated right at the edge of the Pacific on the 350 foot high ragged cliff. The ocean side of the hotel rooms are entirely made of glass to let you enjoy the Big 8ur / San Simeon coastal ocean / mountain views. The Ragged Point Inn and Resort includes a restaurant, hotel gift shop/art gallery featuring local artists as well as local wines and gifts from around the globe. The hotel gift shop as well as a general store both stock Hearst Castle, San Luis Obispo County and Big Sur travel guides and vacation information. There is also an espresso bar and hot dog stand as well as gas station. This is an all inclusive Big Sur resort with a steep grueling beach access trail to a small secluded beach cove and casual trails between view points among ornamental flower gardens. They offer the premier Big Sur Coast view points, a popular North Central Coast wedding location, ocean view dining / lodging, public restrooms, telephones, picnicking and more.

Pets Now Welcome at the Ragged Point Inn Resort but be prepared to pay $50.00 extra per night for 1 pet, $25 additional pets (3-days); upside is if your dog is kept leashed you can have them with you on the restaurant patio and there are considerable dog walk areas. The hotel rooms used for guests with pets are limited to the lobby rooms and there is a long list of pet rules. It is best to call ahead for reservations especially when traveling with your pets.

"The Hacienda" Guest Lodge & Hacienda Bar

This Hearst Castle lodging is a good distance from Hearst Castle and the Pacific Coast. The association that makes it special and the reason it has been included on the Hearst Castle Hotels Website is that it once belonged to William Randolph Hearst and was in fact Hearst Ranch housing and Hearst's guest hunting lodge.

If you are the kind of person who enjoys the road less traveled and especially if you are touring in a sports car or motorcycle then the extra curves and mileage to this Hearst Castle lodging will not deter you, (particularly Nacimiento Fergusson Rd. which is one narrow curvy route you can use to get to The Hacienda Guest Lodge by the Fort Hunter Liggett back gate). The inland weather is most often better and the scenery in route between Hearst Castle and The Hacienda is phenomenal.

Julia Morgan, the same architect that designed Hearst Castle planned the Spanish style Hacienda for Hearst in 1929 and Hearst's hunting lodge provided accommodations for Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Teddy Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover to name a few.

The prices for lodging at the Hacienda is quite reasonable and there is an adjoining bar/lounge which the hours and days of operation vary depending on the season and how busy they are but it is open Wednesday through Saturday or Sunday 7 PM until 11PM weekdays or till 2AM weekends. The Hacienda Bar has cocktails as well as beer and wine, pool, music, chips, pretzels and such (there is talk of pizza maybe coming); also available on base which can be used by civilians who are Hacienda Guest Lodge patrons are many other recreational facilities; there is a restaurant "the Cable Cafe" (open 6AM - 9PM), a sports center, recreation center, swimming pool, bowling alley with dining and a movie theatre which are all on the post and nearby the Hacienda Guest Lodge. The Hacienda is located on US Fort Hunter Liggett you will be under federal jurisdiction so you should expect extra security, rules and regulations.
The M.W.R. (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) at Fort Hunter Liggett now manages the Hacienda Guest Lodge and the Hacienda Bar but regretfully the Hacienda Restaurant closed March 25, 2008; hopefully it will open again sometime (the Hacienda Restaurant Concession is open for private bid; do you want to run a cool restaurant?).
The Mission San Antonio de Padua, the third Spanish Mission in California is a short walk from the Hacienda and is a wonderful place to visit.

The Hacienda has 11 rooms which vary from single rooms with shower and bathrooms down the hall to family rooms to 2 bedroom suites.
