Prior to donating the Hearst Castle ® to California and after the death in 1951 of William Randolph Hearst, the Hearst family donated a plot of San Simeon land on the beach to San Luis Obispo County to be used in memory of W.R. and later it was turned over to the State of California and now it is a wonderful San Simeon California State day use area known as the William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach.

William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach is located adjacent to the historic town of San Simeon (750 Hearst Castle Road; 805-927-2020) just off Pacific Coast Highway One and gives visitors the opportunity to picnic, barbecue, observe nature, hike, explore, sightsee, swim, fish beachcomb and more... A a wonderful popular beach spot with protected cove also that features a pleasure pier with fishing and deep-sea fishing from chartered boats; fishing licenses are not required when fishing from the pier but limits are strictly enforced. Ocean kayaking is also a popular visitor activity as is sunbathing, kite flying and sand castle construction. The pier and long sandy beach both offer the perfect spots for a romantic stroll. Picnic tables, barbecue grill stands, running drinkable water, restrooms, and the close proximity of supplies from Sebastian’s General Store and Café make this the ideal family California Coastal play spot. Recreational activities available for visitors include nature study, exploring, hiking, beachcombing, kite flying, picnicking, barbecuing, swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking and sunbathing.
