The Closest Places to Stay for the Hearst Castle Visitors, San Simeon Acres, "motel row" near Pico Beach...
The business at San Simeon Acres have marketed themselves in an attempt to appear that they are right on the beach close to Hearst Castle ®; the truth is that all the businesses with one exception, the Best Western Oceanfront Cavalier Resort are at least a block off the beach and you will have traveled over 10 miles by the time you get to Hearst Castle. No offense meant but they have a long history of misrepresenting themselves; when they opened their businesses before mail delivery there they all got San Simeon mail boxes so they would have San Simeon addresses (even though Cambria almost as close as San Simeon and more convenient for mail pickups); they chose names like, the "San Simeon Lodge," the "Silver Surf Motel," and the San Simeon Beach Bar and Grill. If while on your vacation to Hearst Castle are looking for someplace unique to stay with a breathtaking ocean view, the Ragged Point Inn is 15 beautiful scenic miles north of San Simeon and the Castle Visitors Center. The only motel with beach-front property near the Castle is the Best Western Cavalier Oceanfront Resort; there haven’t been any hotels or motels in San Simeon since the Bay View Hotel went out of business sometimelate 18-early1900's.
In the late 1950s, a half-mile section of coastline six miles south of San Simeon began to develop as a visitor-serving community for California Coast tourists, Pacific Coast Highway 1 travelers and visitors of Hearst Castle®. Two frontage roads (Hearst Drive and Castillo Drive) on both side of PCH 1 began to grow motels and restaurants, this area was known as San Simeon Acres. In 1878 the Bay View Hotel was built in San Simeon and as recently as 2002 there was a Bed and Breakfast in San Simeon but the Bay View Hotel is long gone and currently the closest place for visitors to stay is one of the motels, hotels or the one resort at San Simeon Acres. Just a few miles further south on the Pacific Coast Highway 1 the Cambria Motels across from Moonstone Beach have become a very popular alternative place for Hearst Castle area visitors to stay. |
