Pinnacles National Monument Is 117 driving miles from the Hearst Castle Visitors center but is so wonderfully unique; an ancient volcanoes left it looking like another planet and the park offers a well maintained affordable (starting at $25) campground I thought it should be included as a good inland alternative on the list of campgrounds near Hearst Castle. The park consists of 26,000 acres of cool other-worldly landscapes in the southern portion of the Gabilan Mountains northeast of King City,
The Pinnacles Campground is formidable and please take note that the camp is located on the east side of the Park and there is NO road that connects the east side of the park with the west. The campground offers tent and group camping, as well as RV sites. The tent sites are well spaced and landscaped with native plants for additional privacy. Each tent and group site has a picnic table and fire ring. Most RV sites have electrical hookups and share community tables and barbecue pits. Water is located throughout the campground. Oak trees provide shade to many campsites. There are all the usual campground amenities as well as showers, a dump station and even a swimming pool which is typically open from middle of April through the end of September. Pets are allowed in the campground, on paved roads and parking lots but are not allowed on trails. Pets must be physically controlled on a six foot leash and should not be left unattended. For more camping information call Pinnacles Campground Store (831) 389-4538. The Campground Store hours: Sunday-Thursday 3:00pm - 5:00pm, Friday 3:00- 8:00pm, Saturday 8:30am - 5:00pm. The park is quite popular and you should seriously consider reserving your desired camp site; tent and RV sites can be reserved up to 6 months in advance, and group sites can be reserved up to 12 months in advance, reserve online or call (877) 444-6777.
The other attraction of Pinnacles is the hiking which is exemplary; the 30+ miles of trails are so well developed and nicely kept. The scenery is breathtaking the caves are cool and the other hikers are mostly friendly. There are also rock climbing and excellent bird watching opportunities at the park.
