This section is mostly just about the areas best beaches, descriptions and available facilities if there are any for the basic ways most people use them; if you are looking for water-sports, ocean activities like, surfing, boating, and diving are covered elsewhere.
There are many delightful beaches in Hearst Castle Country special in its own way all have different persona, benefits, and qualities to enjoy. Some beaches have state maintained facilities to aid in your enjoyment, many are still in their natural state. The closest to the castle is just down the bluff from the Hearst Castle Visitor Center and probably my #1 choice for all-time favorite beaches is the William Randolph Hearst Memorial State Beach near the old village of San Simeon. It has an incredible expansive long sandy beach, sheltered cove, long pier, barbecue grills and public restrooms. This day use area offers many picnic sites on the bluff and a few right down by the beach, loads of free parking, faucets with potable water, barbecue grill stands, restrooms and easy beach access. Visitor activities include picnicking, swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking and sunbathing, the fine white sand beach is great for sand-castle building, the fresh water creek lagoon sometimes offers a warmer alternative to the cold ocean for wading and the long white sand beach is perfect for a leisurely stroll or jog if you want. There is a natural history museum called, the “Coastal Discovery Center”; a kayak and boogie board concession “Kayak Outfitters” with surf and paddle boat equipment for rent, fishing and specialty tours. Sightseeing the old Spanish architecture of San Simeon is fun and you must make a visit to Sebastian’s General Store and Café for some lunch or supplies and Hearst Ranch has a beautiful old west wine tasting room there. See list below for more information about William Randolph Hearst Memorial State Beach...

Photograph of the famous outdoor sports attraction at Arroyo Laguna State Beach famous to sail and kite surfers and sail-boarders, wind surfers around the world; click for a larger photo of the famous windy beach near Hearst Castle visitor center at San Simeon California.
Arroyo Laguna Beach: a famous windsurfing spot north of Hearst Castle now owned by the State of California.

About three miles north is the Arroyo Laguna Beach pictured above. Arroyo Laguna Beach is a very popular windsurfing and kitesurfing spot and it also is a white sandy beach (the majority of our Central California Coast Beaches are grey looking gravel); this sandy beach is great for all the other usual beach activities too, like building sandcastles, beachcombing and enjoying nature. Elephant seals often come to this location; give them plenty of extra space, they aren’t very afraid of you but you should be afraid of them. There is a large dirt pullout off the highway with plenty of parking; it is easy to spot and there are more often than not a few cars there. Beach access is through a fence and over a small piece of property. You can hike all the way to Hearst's San Simeon Point from here if you want and just south of Arroyo Laguna Beach is a short unnamed stretch of beach which has historically been a favorite Hearst family picnic spot. See list below for more information about Arroyo Laguna Beach...
Those two are the best beaches near Hearst Castle but if you would like to combine a 15 mile scenic drive with a strenuous nature hike the Ragged Point Resorts's nature trail to their tiny beach begins at the Ragged Point Wedding Gazebo. The Ragged Point Nature Trail drops more than 300 feet in less than 1/8th mile zigzagging back and forth across their rocky peninsula. The trail starts out steep then gets steeper and has many switch-backs. The rough and rugged trail to Ragged Point Resort's private beach is only for the fit and adventurous but it is worth the short hike if you are up to it. The beach is fun and wonderful and often a great place to get some solitude, then relax at the wine of espresso coffee bar when you return. See list below for more information about the coastal nature trail and private beach at the Ragged Point Inn.

Old Williams Ranch House Marks begining og San Carpoforo Creek Beach trail near Hearst Castle San Simeon, click for a larger copy of the old Williams Ranch House at San Carpoforo Creek.

A nice gravel beach along the way to Ragged Point is San Carpoforo Creek Beach pictured left (that's the real Ragged Point jutting out behind the cove) is the closest easy access to the beach near the Ragged Point Inn; look for the old Williams ranch house on the land side of after the long long tight curve on PCH-1. There is excellent hiking, fishing, beachcombing and surfing at this locale. The areas beaches offer coves of grey gravel broken up by rocks and sections of solid rock pocketed with interesting tide pools; these types of beaches are typical of the Central California Pacific Coast. To park off the highway there are dirt pull offs across from the old ranch house adjacent to San Carpoforo Creek; don't block the gate and get your car all the way off PCH 1. See list below for more information about San Carpoforo Creek Beach...
Also along the way is one of the counties very popular ocean bluff board walks, these boardwalk trails are especially good for the older folks and those that don’t car to get their tootsies in the surf. The boardwalk that is on the way to Ragged Point is the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery view trail; this colony of seals is largest elephant seal rookery on the West Coast and is located about a mile south of the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse on Pacific California Highway One. A large parking area and boardwalk offer easy access to view the elephant seals and along the trail are informative educational placards as well as docents from in blue windbreakers to provide insight as to what the seals are doing. Use information on the list below for more information and to help you locate the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery Viewing Area...

Beaches North of Hearst Historical Monument Visitors Center:

Beach at the Ragged Point Inn:
Small smooth gravel isolated rock/gravel beach exposed during mid/low tides. The fun is in getting there...the hike is steep and strenuous (not good for children) about ¾ of a mile precipitous switch backs that starts from the wedding gazebo. Scenic views are everywhere; Ragged Point Inn is an all inclusive resort that has much to offer.
Facilities: there are no public barbecue grills but there are picnic tables, restrooms, a minimart with picnic supplies, a hotdog stand for fast food, a sit-down restaurant, take away or sit-down wine, beer and espresso coffee drinks. (more details covered above)

San Carpoforo Creek Beach:
the expansive beach is a mixture of rough sand, smooth gravel with rocks, rocky points, sometimes a good surfable break and seasonal creek. Parking is on PCH-1 pullouts and a short dirt access road, do not block the gate; the access is across at the wide sweeping turn that can be recognized by the old white Williams Ranch House on the east side of the Pacific Coast Highway 1. This beach is about 14 miles north of the Hearst Castle Visitors center the Ragged Point Inn is about 1 ½ miles too the north. (more details covered above)

Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery:
There are three parking lots just off the ocean side of the Pacific Coast Highway 1 near this location; the two furthest north have elephant seal rookery bluff-top boardwalk viewing areas with interpretive signs and often there are docents in blue blazers to answer seal questions too. The furthest parking lot to the south has access to rocky beaches but at the two to the north rookery visitors are discouraged from going down on the beach, the seals pretty much own those beaches (you should also steer clear of seals on any beaches ). None of these pullouts have restrooms or picnic tables, the closest services are at Ragged Point 10 miles north.
Facilities: paved pull through parking lots, boardwalk viewing areas with educational natural history signs

Piedras Blancas Motel Beach:
The Piedras Blancas Motel Property consists of a shuttered 14 room 60’s motel and caretakers residence on 20 acres, 1 plus miles of ocean frontage with two nice beaches one smooth gravel which is right by the motel and one fine white sand and seasonal creek just south of the motel. Neither beach is used much these days so you might have some privacy. NOTE: annually in the fall giant kelp forests offshore break up, pieces of dead kelp rot and wash up on the beach; scores of kelp flies breed; bottom line is it smells real bad and playing there is undesirable.
Facilities: the only facilities in use are the parking lot and there is a chemical toilet there also. This is the starting point for the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse Tours.
