The Central California Coast environment fosters hundreds of species of birds and offers endless opportunities for birding, watching and photography. A couple of my favorites are the funny Black-Crowned Night Heron with its iridescent ruby red eyes and the elegant tall long legged bright white Snowy Egrets. They are usually in San Luis Obispo County from September - March. The County, especially near Morro Bay, is one of the top bird-watching sites in the USA. Morro Bay State Park has a colossal shore bird rookery in the eucalyptus trees on the edge of the bay just north of the Natural History Museum, visit there at sundown when all the birds are returning to roost for the night and you will be amazed (hint: wear a hat:).
Video, Morro Bay Pelican Feeding Frenzy
Kayaking in Morro Bay on September 12, 2010 when we saw this amazing feeding frenzy near the Natural History Museum. There were hundreds of pelicans and terns apparently diving into schools of fish. This is a little bit of the action.

San Luis Obispo County Agritourism is a category of vacation pleasures that has been silently growing with little recognition. The truth agriculture and area tourists hand in hand has been going on in SLO Hearst Castle Country for a long time and has in some instances gotten quite large it just hasnt been labeled as such. The biggest players in the Agritourism trade are of course the winemakers, they are very organized and have attractive events for visitors and locals alike throughout the year. Anyone that has been to Knotts Berry Farm knows the family farm can progress way beyond the roadside fruit & vegetable stand. Hearst Castle countrys local agritourism hero would be Linn's Fruit Bin; its a wonderful drive to get to their country store and fun to shop when you get there. Linns has successfully expanded in many areas, like local wholesaling and a restaurant but they dont offer much entertainment yet. Sometimes getting there is half the fun, you may want to consider a road-trip to Avila Beach to visit the Avila Valley Barn. It has become a tradition for me to make an annual trek up the famous See Canyon apple growing country to visit Gopher Glen to get some cheap ugly apples to make apple-butter; See Canyon Road south of San Luis Obispo in the fall is a beautiful and fun back-country road trip. You dont necessarily have to taste the local grown produce to enjoy it though, take for instance one local farm you may just want to visit for the smell-of-it, Grays Lavender Farm. There are some other local family farms expanding into the agritourism industry that are beginning to offer entertainment in addition to their wonderful roadside fruit & vegetable stands or country stores: Jack Creek Farms was the first that I first visited several years ago and now just in time for Halloween comes San Marcos Ranch with the haunted Lost Dutchman Mine and other fun and exotic offerings. Another well established family farm that adds fun to their farm fresh offerings is a goat dairy with a country roadside store and fun critters for the kids to play with, Happy Acres Family Farm.
Fresh Vegies at Farmers Market
Fresh Olive Oil
Not yet mentioned and almost akin to the local wine industry is the olive oil business, any local foodie will tell you that the best place to get good olive oil is at the source, olive oil tasting anyone?: Olea Farm, Olive Oil Tasting - Terrace Hill Olive Oil, - Pasolivo Olive Oil, - Mt. Olive Company. SLO County Local
Local Farmers Markets are a fun activity popular with visitors too and out of town people are traveling here because of our developing lama businesses as well. Most towns in SLO County now have their own Farmers Markets some cities even have two. Each Farmers Market has its own unique charm and claims to fame. Every Farmers Marker offers flowers, honey, locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables some organic produce and crafts, some also offer locally caught fish, and or local beef. Many offer free entertainment. List of San Luis Obispo County/Hearst Castle Country Farmers Markets Every Day of the Week! starting Monday:
