A plethora of world class wines and fun friendly wine tasting in Hearst Castle County!!! You can blend fine wine shopping & tasting of some world-class wines into your Hearst Castle vacation in many ways; you can make it part of your day that includes a tour of the castle, you can combine it with a road trip to another attraction in a nearby town like Paso Robles, Atascadero, San Luis Obispo or Avila Beach, or you can make a whole day or two of it and visit numerous grape growing regions and wineries. There are two distinct wine growing regions in the area, one near Paso Robles and the other San Luis Obispo both are unique and both have wineries producing world-class wines; for your wine tasting trip you can choose to visit just one region or mix it up.
In the inland Paso Robles Region, the long, hot dry summers and chalk and limestone hillsides of Paso Robles wine country yield award-winning red wines like wonderful Zinfandels and Rhone varietals. There is more of a coastal influence in the San Luis Obispo wine region, the cool climate and marine sediment combine to produce the most highly regarded, rich, buttery Chardonnay grapes in California; this wine region is famous for its Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs but they also produce other excellent wines such as Syrah, Sparkling Wines, Port, Grenache, Merlot, Roussanne, and Viognier. Altogether more than 50 different varieties of grapes are grown in the area and there are almost 200 wineries.
Whether you are looking just looking for wineries with a fun and friendly atmosphere; wineries with beautiful colorful gardens for a picnic; a great Zinfandel or Merlot; or some really serious top quality wine tasting and shopping you will find that a wine hunting excursion will greatly add to a memorable Hearst Castle Country vacation experience.
The perfect day of wine-hunting for me would involve visits to three wineries in two AVA (American Viticultural Area) an a at one of the wineries picnic along the way, the most wineries I would visit in a day would be four and that I think is pushing it. You will find that many of the areas wineries are small fun family operations and you very likely will be served in the tasting room by the owner or a family member, it makes it all that more personal and enjoyable I think.
Many think that the wine industry is new here and actually California wines have only been going head to head and winning competitions with the best Europeans a short time the Spanish fathers started vineyards and winemaking here a couple of hundred years ago! Actually wine tasting and visiting one of our local Spanish Missions might be a good match; there are three historic Spanish California Missions within driving distance, San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, Mission San Miguel Arcángel, and California Mission San Antonio de Padua, once part of the Hearst Ranch itself up near Jolon.

Beautiful Landscape Photo of the green coastal hills around Harmony Cellars and a view of the little town of Harmony from the garden; click for a larger look at this beautiful picture of the green hills near Harmony. Harmony Cellars Hilltop Picnic Area

Sometimes a road trip is desirable for a change in weather or scenery but you don't necessarily have to travel far to find great local wines or wine tasting fun; Hearst Ranch Wines now have a tasting room across the highway 1 from the castle visitors center, there are wine shops in Cambria that do tastings of local wines and Harmony Cellars is just south of Cambria.
Hearst Ranch Wine grapes and wine are produced near Paso Robles but the old west style tasting room is right in Sebastian's General Store in San Simeon; there you will find a solid copper bar and a friendly old western saloon atmosphere.
Cambria offers several different location options, Fermentations, Black Hand Cellars, Moonstone Cellars, Wine : Taste, and Madeline's Restaurant and Wine Shop; and Harmony Cellars crafts their wine and has a very friendly tasting room with a beautiful picnic/event area too just to the south of Cambria in the tiny artisan town of Harmony. If you want to wine taste and take a road less traveled to the classic beach town of Cayucos try Cayucos Cellars Wine at their beach side wine tasting room.

Animated police smiley with a flashing light hat to draw attention to the Don't Drink and Drive this part of the wine tasting tour message. The most important part of your wine tasting adventure is your transportation. It is not acceptable to drive yourself and go tasting wines. Don't drink and drive the fines, penalties, and possible repercussions are sever, dreadful, and can be horrific. There are many alternatives the simplest is to have a designated driver but there many limousine and tour companies that are anxious to help you out.

July in San Luis Obispo County Hearst Castle Country, Independence Day Celebrations Big Time, we are mega patriotic here...

In July and the end of June temperatures inland can get extreme and often when that happens gets foggy on the coast. You may want to plan accordingly and be flexible; there are many microclimates in the area and you can often find your perfect desired conditions close by. If you are on the coast and its cool and overcast or foggy it could be a good time to head on a wine tasting adventure inland to warm up; if the heat is to much head to the coast for a cool off.

My Personal Favorite Rotta Winery Tasting Room Front Door

Wondering which wineries to visit? My all-time favorite and one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the county is Rotta Winery, I also like Hearst Ranch Wines, Cayucos Cellars and Harmony Cellars; other popular choices are Castoro Cellars, Tobin James Cellars, J.Lohr Vineyards & Wines, Opolo Vineyards and JUSTIN but the list of great wineries here is long and these are only a few. This website Wine Country Getaways offers great suggestions for tastings at good wineries that are relative close so as not to waste all day on the road, a great wine tasting tour resource.

If you are looking for a less expensive option where you can also meet and interact with other tasters there are companies that specialize in ferrying guests out to the wineries like Breakaway Tours, The Grapeline Paso Robles, and The Wine Wrangler. Also a tour company called The Wine Line offers more wine tasting choices and freedom; unlike most winery tour companies which keep you bound to a set schedule, with a predetermined group of wineries, the same group of people they have shuttle vans that run in a constant loop picking up and dropping off customers approximately every 40 minutes at whichever wineries they desire.

Another way you can join in the celebration as well as increase your wine appreciation and education is to partake in one of the almost constant local wine related events. There is almost always some festival or winemakers dinner going on; check these winery event calendars: Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance Events -- SLO Vintners Event Calendar.
Taste a little TOO much you could even spend the night El Paso de Robles Wine Country at the award winning B&B the Canyon Villa (Sunset best B&B 2016; TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice selection 2017).

A small tour company shuttle-bus may be better than a limousine for making guided winery tours.

Looking for the best beaches near Hearst Castle? You can do nothing at the beach and enjoy it; this section is mostly just about the areas best beaches, descriptions and available facilities if there are any for the basic ways most people use them; if you are looking for water-sports, ocean activities like, surfing, boating, and diving are covered elsewhere. There are many delightful beaches in Hearst Castle Country special in its own way all have different persona, benefits, and qualities to enjoy. Some beaches have state maintained facilities to aid in your enjoyment, many are still in their natural state. The closest to the castle is just down the bluff from the Hearst Castle Visitor Center and probably my #1 choice for all-time favorite beaches is the William Randolph Hearst Memorial State Beach near the old village of San Simeon. It has an incredible expansive long sandy beach, sheltered cove, long pier, barbecue grills and public restrooms. This day use area offers many picnic sites on the bluff and a few right down by the beach, loads of free parking, faucets with potable water, barbecue grill stands, restrooms and easy beach access. Visitor activities include picnicking, swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking and sunbathing, the fine white sand beach is great for sand-castle building, the fresh water creek lagoon sometimes offers a warmer alternative to the cold ocean for wading and the long white sand beach is perfect for a leisurely stroll or jog if you want. There is a natural history museum called, the “Coastal Discovery Center”; a kayak and boogie board concession “Kayak Outfitters” with surf and paddle boat equipment for rent, fishing and specialty tours. Sightseeing the old Spanish architecture of San Simeon is fun and you must make a visit to Sebastian’s General Store and Café for some lunch or supplies and Hearst Ranch has a beautiful old west wine tasting room there.
